i have a 1991 g60 , red cap on the steering fluid

now i have damaged a hose and need to refill , old fluid isnt clear enough to tell what colour

what should i do ? will it cause damage if i use the wrong colour

Hi Steve,

For steering fluid you cannot mix if you're unsure. It is either Red or Green fluid. The best is to purge the whole circuit.

Use only oil ATF MINERAL NOT Synthetic :wink2:

vw parts shop tells me to use green? red was stopped in 1989 and everything uses green

i really dont know whats best

Forget about the colour of the oil today. This is no longer valid. Mine is transparent in ATF.

The important thing is the type of oil.

okay and you suggest what ? i might not get same brands in the uk as you have there

If VW still have green fluid buy it. it is fine otherwise you have to take ATF mineral fluid as above.
for instance i have used Red for one of my car and green for another one.
